What is encaustic?  Encaustic is a molten wax painting medium that dates back to the fifth century B.C..  This technique and art form is experiencing a rebirth in today’s art market worldwide.  Encaustic is a medium that can be used in its natural state or tinted with other products.  It is a medium that endures for lifetimes.  It can be as simple as a preservative for photographs or used to create sculptural elements.

So, we welcome you to the wonderful, versatile, luxurious world of encaustic painting!

The purpose of this book is to provide basic information to both the beginner and professional artist who wish to become involved with encaustic as a painting medium. This guide serves as a teaching tool and studio reference.  It will, hopefully, answer important questions regarding the process of creating an encaustic art work from the beginning stages to the final stages of completion.  The history of this artistic process will briefly be reviewed.  Materials, tools, and important shop and safety practices required for the process will be discussed.

Each chapter of this book provides instruction in essential techniques, such as priming a work surface, fusing wax layers, creating encaustic material, and performning techniques includng engraving and photography.
